Samba
Samba is an open-source software suite that lets Linux and Unix-like systems share files and printers with Windows clients. It implements the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, the native file- and printer-sharing protocol of Windows, so that a Linux server can present shared directories as network drives and shared printers that Windows machines access as if they were local Windows resources. Samba is a cornerstone of interoperability in mixed-platform networks.
What is Samba?
At its core, Samba speaks SMB (and its successor CIFS) on behalf of Unix-like systems. A Linux server running Samba can offer folders and printers to Windows users, handling the protocol translation transparently. Users on Windows browse to the share, authenticate, and read and write files without needing to know the server runs Linux. Because Samba is open source, it provides this cross-platform capability without the licensing costs of proprietary alternatives.
