RHEL Forks
RHEL forks are Linux distributions built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to provide RHEL-compatible operating systems. Because Red Hat releases RHEL's components under open-source licenses, other projects can take that source, remove Red Hat trademarks and branding, recompile it, and distribute the result, typically free of charge. The best-known examples are Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux, and the former CentOS Linux. These forks aim to match RHEL closely enough that software and workflows move between them with little or no change.
What are RHEL forks?
RHEL is a commercial, subscription-based Enterprise Linux distribution comprising the Linux kernel, a curated set of software packages, and Red Hat's support and services. A RHEL fork reuses RHEL's open-source pieces to create an independent distribution that is binary-compatible: applications certified or packaged for RHEL run on the fork without modification. The forks share the same package format (RPM), the same YUM/DNF package management, and access to the same community repositories such as EPEL.
Most RHEL forks are downstream rebuilds, meaning they track RHEL after each release and reproduce it. Their appeal is the combination of enterprise-grade stability and RHEL compatibility without RHEL's licensing costs, which is why they became popular for servers, HPC clusters, and research computing.

Popular RHEL forks
- Rocky Linux, a community-driven downstream rebuild created in 2020 by CentOS co-founder Gregory Kurtzer after CentOS Linux was discontinued. It is governed by the independent Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF).
- CentOS, the original widely used RHEL rebuild, launched in 2004. CentOS Linux was discontinued in favor of the upstream CentOS Stream, which previews future RHEL releases rather than rebuilding shipped ones.
- AlmaLinux, a free downstream rebuild founded by CloudLinux, also created in response to the CentOS Linux discontinuation, with a focus on long-term stability.
- Oracle Linux, a RHEL rebuild from Oracle, available free with optional paid support and optimized for Oracle software.
Why RHEL forks matter
The 2020 shift of CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream removed the stable, downstream, free RHEL clone that many organizations depended on, and directly prompted the creation of Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux. For enterprises and HPC centers, RHEL forks provide continuity: a way to keep running an RHEL-compatible platform, preserve existing automation and application support, and avoid vendor lock-in.

When selecting a RHEL fork, teams weigh compatibility, stability, governance, and the availability of support. Migration between RHEL-compatible distributions is generally straightforward because of their shared foundation, but it is still best practiced with backups, package-compatibility checks, configuration management tooling, and post-migration validation.
