Rocky Linux

Rocky Linux is a free, open-source Enterprise Linux distribution designed to be bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It is a downstream rebuild of RHEL source code, meaning software packaged for RHEL runs on Rocky Linux without modification. The project was created in 2020 as a community-driven successor to CentOS Linux and is stewarded by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF), a self-governing entity established to keep the distribution independent and freely available.

What is Rocky Linux?

Rocky Linux was founded by Gregory Kurtzer, one of the original co-founders of CentOS, shortly after Red Hat announced that CentOS Linux would shift to the rolling-preview CentOS Stream model. That change removed the stable, downstream RHEL clone many organizations depended on. Rocky Linux was built to fill that gap: a production-grade operating system that tracks RHEL releases closely, ships the same package versions, and carries no subscription or licensing fee.

As a downstream rebuild, Rocky Linux takes the publicly released RHEL sources, removes Red Hat trademarks and branding, and recompiles them into a distinct distribution. The result behaves like RHEL at the binary level, which is why it is classified among the RHEL forks alongside AlmaLinux and Oracle Linux. Governance through the RESF is a deliberate design choice, intended to ensure no single company can unilaterally change the project's direction or discontinue it.

Why Rocky Linux matters

For enterprises, HPC centers, and research institutions that had standardized on CentOS Linux, Rocky Linux offered a low-friction migration path that preserved existing workflows, automation, and application compatibility. It delivers the stability of a fixed, point-release cadence rather than a continuously changing stream, which suits production servers and long-lived compute clusters where predictable behavior matters more than the newest features.

Because it is RHEL-compatible, Rocky Linux inherits the broad ecosystem built around Enterprise Linux: vendor certifications, third-party software support, and community repositories such as EPEL. It uses the same package management tooling, YUM and its successor DNF, and the same underlying Linux kernel lineage, so administrators familiar with RHEL or CentOS need little retraining.

How Rocky Linux is built and supported

The distribution is assembled through an open build system that mirrors upstream RHEL releases, with the community providing packaging, quality assurance, and security patch backports. Updates and security errata are published free of charge, and the source code and build infrastructure are openly available.

Rocky Linux is free to download and use, but many organizations running it in production want formal support, hardened configurations, or long-term maintenance commitments.
