EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux)

EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) is a community-maintained repository of additional open-source software for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and RHEL-compatible distributions. It provides high-quality packages that are not included in the base operating system, extending an Enterprise Linux install with tools, libraries, and applications that would otherwise have to be built from source. EPEL is a Fedora Project effort, staffed by volunteers, and its packages are designed not to conflict with or replace those in the core distribution.

What is EPEL?

Enterprise Linux distributions ship a deliberately conservative set of packages chosen for long-term stability and support. EPEL fills the gaps by offering thousands of additional packages, server applications, development tools, system administration utilities, and libraries, packaged to the same standards and rebuilt for each supported Enterprise Linux release. Because it originates from the Fedora Project, EPEL benefits from Fedora's packaging expertise while targeting the stable RHEL ecosystem.

Widely used software available through EPEL includes tools such as Nginx, various language runtimes, monitoring utilities, and developer tooling. The repository also handles dependency resolution, so pulling in one package automatically brings the other packages it requires.

Why EPEL matters

EPEL lets administrators extend a RHEL fork like Rocky Linux or CentOS without abandoning the stability guarantees of the base OS. Instead of compiling software manually, and then having to maintain and patch it by hand, teams get pre-built, community-tested packages that install and update through the system's normal package manager. This is especially valuable in HPC and enterprise environments, where consistent, reproducible software installation across many nodes is essential.

How EPEL works

EPEL is a standard package repository. Using it involves two steps:

  • Enable the repository by installing the epel-release package, which adds the EPEL repository configuration and signing keys to the system.
  • Install packages from EPEL using the system's package manager, YUM on older systems or DNF on current ones, exactly as you would install packages from the base repositories.

Once enabled, EPEL packages appear alongside base packages, and the package manager resolves dependencies and applies updates automatically.

EPEL and third-party repositories

EPEL is an "add-on" repository rather than a base one, and it operates on a best-effort community basis. Packages are generally reliable, but they do not carry the same formal support commitments as the core distribution, and package availability can change over time. Administrators should confirm that a needed package is present for their release and review its suitability before deploying it widely.
