CIQ is one of the founding organizations of OpenELA, and we are proud to see progress in the ultimate mission to preserve the open source nature of Enterprise Linux (EL) and promote its continued development and accessibility. For those navigating the complexities of choosing a Linux distribution, the recent OpenELA announcement about the Leapp project enhancements that support migration between major EL versions has promising implications for everyone in the Linux community. It is a huge step forward.

Simplified and Unified Upgrades Across Enterprise Linux Distributions

The new upgrade tooling in Leapp enables a more streamlined and consistent upgrade experience across the different Enterprise Linux distributions. This advancement addresses a long-standing challenge posed by the varying upgrade tools and processes employed by different vendors. The vendor-neutral collaboration within OpenELA should reduce the reliance on vendor-specific upgrade tools, alleviating concerns about vendor lock-in due to upgrade complexities.

The Leapp project offers greater options and flexibility for organizations relying on or considering Enterprise Linux, among which are increased flexibility in choice, potential cost savings through streamlined upgrades and reduced downtime, an improved security posture with easier access to newer, more secure OS versions, stronger community-driven innovations, and significantly reduced complexity in managing upgrades across diverse Linux environments.
