yeah all right now you can hear me welcome back to sc23 thanks for joining us Rose yes what are we doing oh my God we are live and in person Z you are an actual person I know it's so amazing so good to see you we are at the last and final day of sc23 in Denver Colorado with some amazing people and I would let them introduce himself passing stick to having a really really good time at SC2 everybody's been stopping by uh you know we've had a lot of time to talk to a lot of really interesting folks and just having a really good
time and I'll pass it on to Forest let him introduce himself hi everyone my name is Forest Bert I'm a Solutions Arch was and yeah it's uh it's been a great show so far I I'll pass the hey I'm I'm Philip I'm the head of engineering at think Park uh our product is bgf uh we had a great show this year we had a lot of traffic we Technologies uh a lot of ways to integrate storage into the new AI world into the cloud World um we I think we leave with a lot of very good Impressions about what can be done uh what what
will be requested from storage and um yeah all in all a very interesting show a lot of nice people a lot of good meetups hey I'm Terell uh Terell Russell uh from irods uh we're in the riny booth we've been here for three days our feet hurt but we've been talking to lots of people and uh it's interesting that back hi uh so appreciate uh being invited in sorry for the late arrival um Von Stewart uh vice president for systems engineering at vast data uh what a great show uh we make a data platform uh for HPC and AI um and this has been a
phenomenal show for us because you know where the where the storage you know behind the the new Grace Hopper roll out outside attack and you know we've been kind of I think in years past people have questioned can I get HPC performance out of NFS and and obviously we've broken the the the the performance strangle hold that parallel file systems used to have within uh within this Market space and now we're bringing a whole new set of capabilities to customers around you know if I can neutralize performance now customers start to look at security availability resiliency um and expanded features and and we we're doing

this in terms of our our data platform and so that's my my super quick elevator pitch um you know very Pro on on uh We've we've recently rolled Rocky into being the underlying architecture within our platform right for the enhanced security and um and actually helps us deliver our performance within our architecture so um we are very Pro uh on your Enterprise Linux standard AI training but we're starting to see people try to you know bifurcate out into graph analysis and different workloads like that uh and even build dedicated hardware for that type of thing so just continuing to see uh hear the proliferation of
Technology beyond the GPU and uh you know Computing devices like that it looks like that is still on a huge upward Trend uh especially as we kind of you know start to flatten out on Moors law uh so it'll be exciting to see especially you know next year what what sticks around what ends up becoming the standard and uh you know what's out there in the end it's back e sorry about that everyone we are back and we're going to go back into the AI what have you seen what is interesting kind of fallowing up on for was part of the question yeah I think
where we where we went off was uh we we were talking about um all of the interesting things uh that we see here and that it's going to be interesting what sticks around because we see a lot of people having great ideas and we are trying to uh listen to those ideas distill them into what we can do to support these ideas but it's also going to be interesting to see what what comes of these in the next couple of years and I think uh there is a big boom obviously what we've seen from compared to last year uh in terms of how many companies
specialize in that field now uh and that the HPC world has kind of taken a little bit been taken over by by the AI storm right now and it's going to be interesting to see this year that maybe you didn't see last year what interesting science have you seen since your world domination well you know I I I think that um you know what what really has impressed me uh you know this year and we kind of talked about this a little bit uh you know last year as well so um as far as the science goes just our ability to help scientists with their
work is what's really you know been impressing me and and what I'm excited about when when I first started coming to SC uh about five or six years ago you know we we were trying to um you know get people to to know what Apper was and we didn't even have a booth we didn't have any any marketing we didn't have anything we had a gorilla marketing campaign basically where we were going and putting stickers up and we had um you you remember Rose we were doing yeah we're doing um you know just just kind of we really called it g Gorilla Marketing and last
year when I came to SC I went to a lot of uh birds of a feather and talks and things like that that didn't even have anything to do with containers and in each one of those talks Apper came up as just sort of like system software that we just use and that everybody uses and just enables HPC as a matter of course and it was just it was beautiful to see you you know how um what we're doing is impacting people's science and impacting people's research and just having a big change and now we're getting to the point where it's the same thing with
Rocky it's like a known entity that everybody just uses because what else would you you know possibly use and it's just helping everybody's science and we're we're getting there with werewolf too I mean werewolf I feel has has been an incredibly bobblehead yeah you know as you're talking yes yes werewolf is just like I feel really exploded this year um and um you know we're we're we're starting to see more people uh being being interested in fball and starting to understand what it is and coming to us and talking to to us about it um we're getting there also with the sender and Mountain so
I I think what um and our company ciq we're also a known entity as well so I think that what has really impressed me on the research side is just how we are able to help facilitate research to the point where the the things that we're working on are are just underlying technology that we're just assuming is going to be there and it's always going to work and that that just you know really makes me feel great to work for our company and do that yeah Davis said much of what I was going to say but I'll just add on and point out that uh
even the student cluster competition this year we have I think at least half of the teams running on Rocky um so yeah seeing that recognition of what we're doing really affecting the space and really kind of proliferating out there has been great um I haven't had too much of a chance to walk the floor myself and check out the research uh I know over at the Texas Tech University Booth I'm real big on uh Allen s's little touring pie learning platform that he's put together uh with these little uh like compute blades and uh like a Nick and stuff like that um real neat little
learning platform for HPC so as far as research goes I'd say that that kind of uh trying to decrease the barrier of Entry of people in HBC and you know creating something that high schools could use something like that um that could help get more people into the industry from an earlier age that has probably been the most interesting thing I've seen so far yeah I think what what I've seen is that uh in the in the last couple of years the research and Science World has become so intertwined with the HPC Community basically everybody needs to use compute now there is no branch of
science I feel anymore that doesn't need that type of compute and I think for us as kind of the lowlevel file system vendors of H of the HPC world that brings a couple of new challenges because uh people get into HPC that don't really know about all of the infrastruct infrastructure below I think that has already been said it it it's becoming kind of a a thing that is just there that just has to work and uh I think the challenge for us is to um to help people make that work actually to to help people uh maybe get a little bit more structure into
their data uh see what what how how they can best utilize uh our our underlying storage our underlying file systems and what they can do or what we can do to help them with organizing that data categorizing that data moving that data around um yeah and making sense of all the data they produce because I think that is that is what we've seen in science it's just vast amount of dat of data that that are getting produced every day and they have to be dealt with somehow he just said vast data that was that was a great endorsement um you know you're always lucky when
you're sitting in the the the the last spot in a conversation because I get to um complement a lot of the conversations and the statements that we already made and so um when we what what we're doing today that's making a significant impact around research facilities is actually allowing researchers to to do more science um kind of mentioned in the last comment I made around you know delivering the performance of HPC out of NFS but the other byproduct that we're providing is is we're eliminating system downtime right not having it to you know take down time to maintain the system so it's all the storage
platform is always available allowing more jobs to run we're also finding that customers now or sorry research environments now are are are having to deal with security requirements that maybe they didn't have to in the past right you'd let your your compute grid just age out and now the university is coming in and saying there's this vulnerability we've got a patch go update you know thousands of nodes and this is kind of also seen where you know the Market's shifting and coming into you know an alignment with what we do which is when you're using just native protocols we make the the maintenance the maintenance
of the Linux infrastructure much simpler we don't have to about sticking in IO drivers and and kernel drivers and modules and so um bottom line to what what you said for us which was how do we allow more research right you were talking about bringing more people into research we're talking about how do we run more jobs in parallel right let researchers get to get to science faster pass you the microphone um yes okay yeah we've hadu are we still on we're still on all right cool um so please introduce our yourself and then let us know what it is that you have found around
here that has most inspired you in terms of the new tech coming out okay great well thank you very much for inviting me to uh to come here oh up up okay cool great thank you for for inviting me my name is Scott Hurst I'm with uh cornelis networks um our product we are a uh a high performance Computing fabric uh provider uh providing fast interconnects to ensure that uh you know workloads get done quickly as as efficiently as possible taking advantage of the bandwidth and and the uh the compute power right and so we work with ciq uh from standpoint of of a partner
who's very very important to ensuring that we are optimizing our products right to help accelerate Computing to ensure that you know you know customers using Rocky Linux and other products that that you have as well too um our partnership with ciq has been uh you know continue to grow and uh and collaboration here what I've seen at the show it's very been very interesting obviously all around the buzz around AI of course right that's that's the new great big thing uh we see it as well too and so uh I think one of the gentlemen also uh spoke about you know getting more people involved
in high performance Computing I see that uh especially with AI you know the um we've heard about the democratization of high performance Computing or supercomputing well I think AI is the one that's that's helping to manifest that right and so uh we've heard a lot of Buzz a lot of uh interest in that there's also that traditional you know HBC right we're going to continue to do that provide uh solutions for that but we are also uh really focused on on on ensuring that the next generation of workload that is going to have to require a lot of bandwidth a lot of uh you know
compute power that work has to get done quickly and you know using Rocky Linux and some of the other products including fuzzball to help stand up you know things and and and and aper as well we're very excited to work with h with ciq thank you good thank you for inviting me absolutely you have a question Rose no okay so I I have another question yeah so as you walk Oh I thought as you walk around and you look at stuff and you come back year after year because I know several of us have been here what is one thing you would like to see
next year that you don't this year and I know it's a tough question question okay I do actually have an answer for that because I remember coming last year when we were in Texas and there was lots of robots Okay there was like dog robots people robots little robots big robots they were dancing there's you know things happening all over the place I have not seen that this year so I would like to actually bring back the robots I feel like Forest told me that there was a robot arm making coffee did you tell me that a robot arm okay we're going in the right
direction but I think more more is better right what would you like to see Dave more robots yes okay yeah um yeah I don't know I mean so so uh I have to be honest that I haven't walked to show floor that much this year because i' I've been um here at our booth Manning the booth most most of the most of the time I did walk the show floor uh a little bit yesterday with my family and I walked it uh a little bit before actually opened um but as far as you know what I'd like to see more of I guess in the
in the future um as we get uh some of our new products rolled out to more customers I am really anticipating and looking forward to just as we saw the adoption of abtain and we're seeing the adoption of Rocky to seeing the adoption of more of those products and to seeing more of what they're what what people are doing with those products and to talk to them more about you know how we're helping them and you know what kinds of new features they need and and you know things of that nature so we're already seeing a lot of that but I'd like to see more
of that in the coming years so what you're saying is that you would like a robot that says powered by Rocky that that's exactly what I'm saying Rose yeah we need a we need a rocky robot Rocky robot I can't top that I'm looking for the rocky robot as well um yeah much like Dave I would mostly Echo what he has to say there I am really excited to see uh all the hardware and stuff like that here um it seems like we don't see as much software type vendors as we do Hardware almost um so much like you Dave I'm very excited to see
kind of where our stack goes and you know kind of how and what people start building off of it um it's already been great to hear about people switching over to Rocky on their systems um using werewolf all that stuff in their deployments as is um so especially with kind of our new products that we have Mountain cender I'm really interested next year to hear from users uh where and how those are being implemented in their architecture yeah I also didn't really have the chance to look around too much um I think it's uh it's very interesting and very great to see that that more
people are coming to the show again that was what I'm uh and that can always be more I think uh and I think the industry is increasing so uh I think um more maybe even even more uh diversity in in terms of topics that can be um that can be discussed here I think I think the the the world of HBC is just broadening and I think that's going to be exciting to see in the next couple of years robots are so superc Computing 22 so for super Computing 24 we need to show progress and evolution so cyborgs so I'm just of course it's absolutely
a rocky powered cyborg ciq you need to make it happen uh you know the so kind of echoing some sentiment that was shared here um uh I love i' love seeing all the students I'd love to see more diversity love to continue to see the the lowering of the average age of the attendee um uh really like to see that um Forest mentioned it and so again I keep piggybacking off the things you're saying um lots of great technology here more hands on lab more hands-on experience if if if I believe this if you if you have you know gamechanging technology then let's put it
on display and and it helps from an awareness perspective it helps you know shorten the Cycles to when uh those who could benefit from the technologies that we bring to bring to Market within our our our respective companies um it allows them to shorten the Gap but also from a product and Engineering perspective direct feedback right d direct feedback sitting right there so a lot of boosts with a lot of demos demos are great Labs well yeah yeah I I you know I I I I I like what he said there I like the Hands-On uh aspect because I think that doing more Hands-On you
know maybe inside of Booth is going to be very very helpful to help you under you know help uh people understand your product but more importantly it'll help them uh you know be able to understand how how hyper Computing can really assist them in their in in getting work done right right so so so with us I mean we we want to see yeah I I yeah sure maybe more robots or cyborgs but uh we're very excited about our product CN 5000 that will be released in 2024 so a year from now we're going to be uh talking with customers about that their experience in
using that and we're very very focused on that because it's a it's a product that's going to continue to enhance compute to speed up things and so that we can get more workload done and so but yeah all these ideas are are very very good I think you know look into the future that that's what that's what I really enjoy about uh high performance Computing I actually left the industry for about four or five years I was in it for about 11 or 12 years and I came back and I'm like wow it's amazing the the the the Innovation that has happened in the inter
room right and so um very excited what what what was on the floor today I think we're going to see I think was this the largest attendant ever I it's about 15,000 people times that I've been before you know pre-co uh you know we're sitting about 10 or 12,000 or so the fact that we're I I think we're now back I think that that that that's an exciting thing right so I think next year will be even bigger in Atlanta so absolutely thank you very much did you have something I don't I don't know oh I mean I feel like like it's all been said
because I'm I'm I'm inspired I'm excited this is amazing and we're already talking about next year so thank you for giving the little tease for that of what's coming for next year we got cyborgs on the table everybody's running Rocky there's labs and Labs I like lab one one thing that I did want to or one thing that I on a serious note uh more times for the bosss it looks like we consistently uh this year I think they were all at basically like the same couple of times so if at all possible more diversity of times for that so we can have a little
bit more of a chance to check those out yeah y I just wanted to mention uh my son was here yesterday it was family night yeah oh sorry well I well he wanted to see more stuff I think he wanted and more pinball machines so if we're like you know like the the people who are you know organizing the the pinball machines and the VR they need you know increase the the quantity of the okay we got to bring him to the party there was a party the B party had some pinball machines oh yeah he would love that right exactly okay so what I
think probably where you were going with that though is the inclusiveness that SC is is providing opportunities for families to come in there's always a family night where you get kind of like complimentary right passes for your family to come in so they can come in and see all of this amazingness and walk around and get the swag and talk to people and see the cyborgs and you know all the cool stuff so yeah I think that's a that's a really good wrap-up is there anything else that you guys want to mention or say or topics any topics well all you got something yeah go
ahead do it so in all seriousness yeah I mean it it was a tremendous opportunity I mean we actually we actually got my son Johnny out of school early and my wife uh and he and and and our daughter came and saw this you know it wasn't just pinballs and VR you know it's it's uh it's kind of seeing you know a little bit like what Daddy doeses but also um you know all these amazing universities and companies and some of the things that they're doing and so I feel like it's a it's a you know we felt like it was a great learning opportunity
and it wasn't you you know wasteful or bad to take him out of school early on a day and actually bring them to a field trip and and show them so it's bringing in the Next Generation bringing in you know younger people I think that that's that's is a really really great thing that the the um the the um conference does you know yeah yeah I think I I'd Echo that I think um what i' what I'd like to see and what I'm starting to see already is that that uh we are getting a younger generation in again and we're also getting more diversity we're
getting more women into HPC uh we had a great event uh with the women in HPC party it was very nice to see that the diversity is increasing in HPC and that it's kind of Shifting the generations a little bit and I think that's that's very cool to me that's awesome thank you are we wrapping up okay okay well thanks for watching thank you for your patience as we figured out our microphone issues um we are going to be back actually a couple more times today so we're going to be doing a walk around on the booth so you can kind of see our different
